Art is Serious Play. Get Inspired so you can Inspire your Kids! In this working group, we will work with different media to explore the process of making art with children. Each week parents in this group will start with a different theme and create a work of art inspired by it.

About Get Inspired with Art

This working group will break things down in a step-by-step approach that will be easy for parents to pass on to their children. We’ll explore abstract art, self-portraits and more. We’ll use both reference and imagination as tools. Often I will refer to a work by a famous artist and we’ll discuss what we think about the artist and what we’re trying to achieve. Or, we’ll discuss how basic shapes can make up a picture and how to apply these observations to our own work. But, the tactile aspect of art making is very important for children. So, there’s plenty of room for imagination and creativity.

There is a freedom inherent in art like nowhere else and that should not be squelched. Sometimes things begin to gel in a visual, instinctive way before they do in a logical, linear way and this means of communication can be very powerful. So, it's important to keep the thinking fresh and allow ideas to flow. Children are different. One may need very little structure to get the ideas going whereas another may feel too nervous or intimated to move without more serious guidance. Here is where the skills come in. Here is where you tell them that artists use tools and reference to achieve effects. This can give them the satisfaction of producing something they can feel proud of and increase their sense of self-esteem.

Appropriate for parents with children ages 5 through 11.
